Dan discusses the social history of sword swallowing in a variety of cultures over the past 4000 years, and probes the reasons WHY people have attempted to swallow swords for thousands of years. He describes how science and medicine have historically utilized sword swallowers for medical research over the past 150 years since Dr. Adolph Kussmaul enlisted a sword swallower to help develop the rigid endoscope in 1868.
